A new book co-edited by Brandon University (BU) professor Dr. Kelly Saunders is billed as “the definitive study of Manitoba politics of our time.”

The Keystone Province: Politics and Governance in Manitoba is available from the University of Manitoba Press. Dr. Saunders, the chair of BU’s Department of Political Science, and co-editor Dr. Christopher Adams of the University of Manitoba had the idea of creating a new resource that would provide an overarching view of Manitoba’s political climate, from its conception to the present day. They assembled a group of writers from Manitoba universities as well as other political experts to produce 13 chapters on topics from Louis Riel and the founding of Manitoba to the present state of the province’s political parties. Topics including municipal government, gender, Indigenous peoples and rights, and media and crown corporations in Manitoba are also addressed.

“Naturally, the political landscape of Manitoba has evolved greatly in the last 150 years, but there are issues from the early days of our province that remain with us today,” Dr. Saunders said. “Throughout it all, politics in Manitoba continues to be a fascinating and dynamic topic to study for anyone with an interest in how our government and society work.”

Manitoba’s Lieutenant-Governor Anita R. Neville will host the editors for a book launch at Government House in Winnipeg on Tuesday, Oct. 14 as part of a series of free public events. They will discuss The Keystone Province and the need it fills as a comprehensive and modern look at politics in Manitoba. Registration and program details are available at Manitobalg.ca/book-launch-of-the-keystone-province-politics-and-governance-in-manitoba-with-kelly-saunders-and-christopher-adams.

Future launch events in Brandon and Winnipeg are in the works as well.

“Christopher Adams and I are very pleased with the response and the interest we’ve had in The Keystone Province so far,” Dr. Saunders said. “We’re proud of the wide representation of history and issues presented in the book, and even those from other provinces will find that many of the themes are universal in Canadian politics.”
