Brandon University is celebrating Dr. Aloysius C. Anyichie, who has been named one of this year’s Top 25 Canadian Immigrants Award recipients. This prestigious national honour celebrates immigrants making remarkable contributions to Canada and winners are selected through an extensive nomination, judging, shortlisting, and public online voting process. It was presented earlier this month (on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2025) at TIFF Bell Lightbox in Toronto.

Dr. Anyichie, an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education, is not only the sole winner from Manitoba this year, but he is also both the first ever from the Brandon community and the first BU faculty member to receive the honour, which was first presented in 2009. It’s a groundbreaking milestone for both the university and the province.

“This recognition is more than an award,” said Dr. Anyichie. “It is a testament to resilience, faith, and the transformative power of giving back to the community. I am humbled to be counted among so many inspiring Canadians.”

As a leading scholar in culturally responsive teaching and self-regulated learning, Dr. Anyichie empowers educators to support the motivation, engagement, and success of diverse learners.

“Dr. Anyichie exemplifies the very best of what it means to be an educator and a community leader,” said Dr. Alysha Farrell, Dean of Education at Brandon University. “His research challenges us to reimagine classrooms as places where every learner feels seen, valued, and empowered, and his mentorship work extends that same vision far beyond the university. We are extraordinarily proud to celebrate this national recognition of his contributions.”

Outside of the campus, Dr. Anyichie is also the founder of the Loy Excellentia Initiative, a mentorship and leadership platform supporting Black, African, and Caribbean students and professionals across Canada.

“Dr. Anyichie’s story is one of courage, excellence, and deep commitment to inclusive education,” said Dr. Kofi Campbell, Acting President and Vice-Chancellor of Brandon University. “We are honoured to have him in our community. His work continues to inspire us all to lead with equity, empathy, and purpose.”

As Brandon University continues to cultivate impact-driven educators and change-makers, Dr. Aloysius Anyichie’s award stands as a beacon of what’s possible when resilience meets purpose, and when one person’s dream becomes a collective celebration.
