National award caught her by surprise

Dr. Candice Waddell-Henowich (centre-right) won a national award she'd had no idea she was even in the running for.

Candice Waddell-Henowitch was in Quebec City for meetings when she was shocked to hear her name being called to the stage.

An associate professor in BU’s Department of Psychiatric Nursing, Dr. Waddell-Henowitch was in Quebec to attend the national members meeting of the YWCA; she’s outgoing president of YWCA Westman, a role she held for three years, and is now a member of the YWCA Canada board.

She’d had no idea that her colleagues had nominated her for the Amelia Blizzard Award, which is presented annually to a volunteer whose leadership and compassion have made a lasting impact on the YWCA movement.

Dr. Waddell-Henowitch was one of 11 people to receive awards at the national meeting.

“The YWCA is a family. It’s such a supportive group of women who are trying to build each other up. And just the fact that they nominated me is another one of those instances of them doing just that,” she told the Brandon Sun.

In a social media post, YWCA Westman said that Dr. Waddell-Henowitch “has led bold, transformational change” at the organization, “redefining our mission and launching the ambitious Women’s Campus project, which will support women and survivors across Southwestern Manitoba.”

One of Dr. Waddell-Henowich’s recent projects, cited by YWCA Westman, was the graphic novella It Happened to Me and it’s Not Okay: Sharing Stories of Sexual Violence.
