Brandon University grieves loss of former Board Chair Bill Potter

Brandon University is saddened to learn of the passing of William “Bill” Potter, a dedicated educator, librarian, and former Chair of BU’s Board of Governors. Bill passed away on February 15, 2025, at the age of 84.

A proud BU alumnus, Bill earned both his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees here before going on to a distinguished career in school libraries. His passion for education extended beyond the classroom, as he served on the provincial executive of the Manitoba Teachers’ Society and later provided strong leadership as Chair of BU’s Board of Governors in the mid-1980s.

Bill’s commitment to learning and service was evident in every aspect of his life. Whether mentoring students, volunteering internationally, or supporting his community, he made a lasting impact. Even in retirement, his love of knowledge, travel, and sport kept him active and engaged.

A full obituary is available online, which indicates that a family gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate his life.

The Brandon University flag will be lowered to half-mast in his memory.
