Dr. Mirkovic served as a professor of sociology for 31 years until his retirement in 2000, when he was honored with the title of Professor Emeritus. His scholarly focus on the sociology of genocide, particularly in the Balkans during WWII, contributed to global academic discourse and inspired generations of students. Even after retirement, he remained active in his field, publishing extensively and mentoring students pursuing advanced studies.

Born in Croatia (former Yugoslavia), Dr. Mirkovic’s journey to academia was shaped by resilience and an unwavering pursuit of knowledge. After earning his law degree from the University of Zagreb, he later pursued graduate studies in North America, obtaining an M.A. from Brandeis University and a Ph.D. from the University of Alberta before joining Brandon University.

Dr. Mirkovic’s impact extended far beyond the classroom. He was known for his deep commitment to his students, particularly international students, whom he welcomed into his home for meals and celebrations, ensuring they felt supported while studying far from their families.

“Your lectures weren’t just lessons; they were invitations to question, to empathize, and to see the interconnectedness of humanity,” wrote Weiming Zhao in a recent letter to his former professor that was shared with permission. Zhao, a noted painter in Brandon had been a student of Dr. Mirkovic’s in the 1990s.

“Those moments became the foundation of not only my own outlook but also the way I strive to engage with the world. Your kindness turned a mentor into a lifelong friend. Your personal encouragement and appreciation of the arts played such an important role in my taking an active pursuit of visual arts late in my life.”

“If I’ve learned anything from you, it’s that our lives are measured not in years, but in the ripples we leave in others.”

Dr. Mirkovic’s love for knowledge, culture, and the arts was evident throughout his life. He enjoyed an outdoor life of camping and canoeing in Manitoba as well as travelling with his wife, photography, classical music, and art history, and he found great joy in the companionship of his beloved dogs.

At his request, there will be no funeral, but a celebration of life will be held on March 16 in Port Moody, BC. In his memory, donations may be made to the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation, Dying With Dignity Canada, or the Brandon Humane Society.

Brandon University will lower our flag to half-mast in his honour.
