The Brandon University School of Music will welcome several talented guest artists and a wide range of woodwind enthusiasts for the 15th anniversary of the BU Clarinet Festival on Saturday, March 1 and Sunday, March 2.

The weekend will be packed with performances, including guest artists such as Wonkak Kim, Rachel Yoder and Michael Dassios, School of Music faculty member Callie Siverson and former BU faculty Kyung Kim and Victoria Sparks. Brandon University alum Justine Burke will lead the festival clarinet choir, while the BU Clarinet Choir and festival host Catherine Wood will also perform.

“The BU Clarinet Festival is truly one of the highlights of the year for me, and I’m thrilled to welcome so many familiar and new faces as we join together to share our love of the instrument,” said Wood, who is a Professor in the School of Music. “The workshops are a great opportunity for us all to learn from one another, while the performances allow us to share an incredible musical experience with our community.”

The performances will begin on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall, with Viðarneistí, featuring Catherine Wood, on clarinet and Victoria Sparks on marimba.

Wonkak Kim and Kyung Kim, on piano, will present a pro series performance on Saturday, also at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for the concert cost $20 for adults and will be available at the door.

“The performances allow us to share an incredible musical experience with our community.”

Sunday’s lineup will feature Callie Siverson, horn; Michael Dassios, clarinet; Colin Mehmel, clarinet; and Danielle Guina, piano, at 12:15 p.m., at the Lorne Watson Recital Hall. Following that, Rachel Yoder, clarinet, bass clarinet and electronics, will take the stage at 2 p.m., at the Lorne Watson. The final concert, beginning at 3 p.m., in the Kinsmen Hall (Room 1-20 of the Music building), will feature the BU Clarinet Choir and the Festival Clarinet Choir.

With the exception of Saturday evening’s pro series concert, all performances are free to attend, and all are welcome.

“I tip my hat to Catherine and her students, who have put together an incredible lineup of concerts and developmental opportunities that offer something for everyone, from young to experienced clarinetists and educators, to those who just love to experience the joy of live music,” said Greg Gatien, Dean of Music at Brandon University. “The BU Clarinet Festival is a wonderful example of bringing our community together to share our passion for music and learning.”
