BU mourns passing of Murray Sinclair

Brandon University is deeply saddened by the passing of Murray Sinclair.

An Anishanaabe man who devoted his life to service, Sinclair was a former Senator, Manitoba’s first Indigenous judge, and a Companion of the Order of Canada.

Accolades and remembrances have been pouring in, including in APTN, the Brandon Sun, the Winnipeg Free Press, and the CBC.

Sinclair may be best remembered for six years from 2009–15 during which he chaired Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Shouldering an emotional burden on behalf of all Canadians to hear the harms caused by the residential schools, Sinclair issued strong and clear calls to action to begin a process of healing.

“Reconciliation is not an Indigenous problem. It is a Canadian one,” he told us.

Brandon University takes those words to heart. We have lowered our flag to half mast in his honour.
