Writing group for students gets creative

A fountain pen lies on a writing pad

Calling all student creative writers!

The newly formed Brandon University (BU) Literary Lounge invites students to attend its on-campus creative writing group.

The group’s first meeting takes place on Thursday, Nov. 7, from 6 to 7 p.m., in Room 104 of Clark Hall. Pizza and refreshments will be served, courtesy of the Department of English, Drama, & Creative Writing.

According to organizer Emily Wiebe, a BU Education student, the Literary Lounge is for student creative writers of all levels working in any genre of writing, whether poetry, fiction, non-fiction, drama, or any other form. Sessions will be held on a twice-monthly basis.

“We’re hoping to provide a space for people to focus their creative energies through the written word,” says Wiebe.

Wiebe envisions a variety of activities that the group could potentially engage in. The hour-long session might involve sharing samples of your work within the group, for example. It might involve simply providing a block of time for students to work on their own writing in the same space with other writers.

“We’re hoping to provide a space for people to focus their creative energies through the written word.”

Emily Wiebe, organizer

Wiebe would love to see the Literary Lounge become a forum for inviting guest writers to campus for readings and workshops.

“It would be really fun to organize an off-campus literary outing, as well,” she says.

Other possible activities might include poetry slams and a literary banquet.

“Those who come out to the Literary Lounge,” she says, “can contribute to the overall focus and direction of the group.”
