BU statement on the sudden passing of AMC Grand Chief Cathy Merrick

Brandon University is shocked by the sudden passing of Cathy Merrick, the inspiring Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs.

BU President David Docherty offered the following words:

We all grieve this loss. Chief Merrick was a powerful leader with the rare balance of vision of compassion that stirs one’s heart and drives real change in the world. We will miss her passion and her energy.

As the first woman to lead the AMC, Chief Merrick led the charge to remedy many of the wrongs of the past, and to brighten the future. Among her seemingly tireless work, she strove on behalf of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls as well as for investigating and identifying the final resting places of child victims of the residential school system. These are causes that are important to us at Brandon University, and we will carry on our efforts in her memory.

Our thoughts are with her family and her friends — she leaves a huge group of those who cared for her. All of Brandon University sends our sincere condolences on this immeasurable loss.
