Brandon University and the Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union have each ratified a new four-year Collective Agreement for the nearly 100 key support staff represented by MGEU at BU.

The new deal covers a four-year period from April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2028 and replaces the previous agreement, which expired at the end of March this year.

“This is a very good and very fair deal, and I thank everyone on both teams for their thoughtful contributions and commitment at the table, which let us advance in relatively short order,” said Kristen Fisher, BU’s Associate Vice-President (People and Talent) and the university’s lead negotiator. “Members of the MGEU are critical to the success of Brandon University and this new collective agreement appropriately recognizes the dedication of these colleagues to our academic mission and to our daily operations.”

Under the new agreement, MGEU members will receive general wage increases of 2.5%, 2.75%, 3%, and 3%, as well as vacation and sick leave accrual enhancements and new step adjustments that better recognize employees with extended terms of service to the university. The new agreement also clarifies language related to leaves, internal postings, and right of return.

Other specific enhancements include an increase in funds available for career development, an increase in maternity and parental leave benefits, a significant jump in shift premium for overnight and weekend work, and a new footwear allowance for some members.

The MGEU represents more than 90 full- and part-time members at Brandon University including administrative support staff, and staff in Food Services, the Library and at the Healthy Living Centre.

With ratification, the new agreement is now in force. Following final proofing and printing, an official signing is planned for later this year.
