The Brandon University Faculty of Education recently celebrated the work of exceptional mentor teachers.

Kerri Malazdrewicz of the Brandon School Division and Rebecca Okemow of the Park West School Division were both honoured as Exceptional Mentor Teacher Award winners. They were chosen from among 25 nominees. The Mentor Teachers work with Education students as a component of the field experience practicum courses, playing a key role in their success.

A nominator lauded Malazdrewicz for combining guidance with empowerment:

“Every Teacher Candidate should get a Mentor Teacher like Kerri. Kerri was welcoming and prepared from Day 1. She provided me with resources while still letting me branch off and do my own thing in the classroom. You can tell Kerri loves her job and it made me excited to teach, too. She showed me how she organizers her teaching materials, and I’ve done it that way ever since (planning out unites, unit printouts ready before the unit even starts, etc.). Overall, I had an amazing experience with Kerri.”

Okemow was credited for being inspirational by a nominator:

“Rebecca truly deserves this award for her exceptional mentorship and positive impact on my journey as an educator. Her influence has profoundly shaped my goals and aspirations in education. She embodies the qualities of an outstanding educator and role model, and her contributions to the lives of students and the educational field as a whole are truly inspiring.”
