A senior finance leader with extensive financial and management experience in both the private and public not-for-profit sectors will join Brandon University as the institution’s new Vice-President (Administration & Finance).
Peter Hickey will join Brandon University on Sept. 1, 2024, bringing with him demonstrated leadership in corporate financial and strategic planning, cost controls, risk management, treasury, system and process optimization, and team management.
Hickey comes to BU from Toronto, where he served most recently as the Director, Finance and Administration, including time as Interim Chief Financial Officer (CFO), for the Children’s Aid Society of Toronto. Having grown up and spent significant time in Northern Ontario, in the Sudbury and North Bay areas, Hickey said the opportunity to return to a smaller centre was appealing.
“Within a smaller centre, you have the ability to become more fully involved and to build strong community connections, something my family and I truly value and appreciate,” said Hickey, who enjoys spending time outdoors and on camping trips with his family in his free time. “Everyone at Brandon University has been incredibly welcoming during my visits, and I am looking forward to getting to know the faculty and staff in the fall, and to truly integrating into the Brandon community.”
Hickey’s educational achievements include the attainment of the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designations, as well as a Master of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Commerce degree from Laurentian University. Hickey’s financial leadership spans both the public and private sectors, with more than eight years leading finance within the Ontario Child Welfare sector, preceded by various financial and supply chain leadership roles within the consumer-packaged goods sector with organizations like Maple Leaf Foods, Nestlé Canada, and Kraft Canada, among others.
Hickey also brings significant experience serving on not-for-profit boards, in the capacity of Board Director and Finance Chair, with eCampus Ontario, One Kids Place Children’s Treatment Centre and Children’s Mental Health Ontario.
“Peter’s wealth and range of experience really stand out, and Brandon University will benefit from his deep insight gained from a variety of sectors,” said BU President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. David Docherty. “I am equally impressed by his eagerness to engage with the campus, and I know he will soon become an invaluable member of our community.”
As VP (Administration & Finance), Hickey will provide high-level oversight of the university’s Financial and Registration Services, Business Operations, Physical Plant, and Workplace Safety and Health. He will also serve as a member of the President’s Executive Council and will provide regular reporting to the BU Board of Governors.
“I’m excited and honoured to join the education field at Brandon University,” Hickey said. “Post-secondary education provides tremendous opportunity for students, and I also see great opportunity for BU. I’ve heard about exciting projects in the works, and I’m eager to play my role in bringing those to life.”
Hickey assumes the position left vacant by the departure of Scott Lamont, who retired after 30 years of service to Brandon University at the end of June.
“We offer all our thanks to Scott for his extensive dedication to Brandon University and wish him all the best in retirement,” Docherty said.
