Easier WiFi connection switched on for BU campuses

It is now easier for everyone to connect to secure wireless Internet on campus at Brandon University.

IT Services at BU has switched on new wi-fi networks that streamline your authentication, open up new options for guests, and will keep your connection secure. The old networks will remain active for a few weeks, so everyone has time to transition devices to the new network.

The new networks that are available now are:

BU_Secure

This network is for all faculty, staff, and students and will replace the BU_Wireless network with a much more convenient network. There is no longer a need to install a trusted certificate or to onboard your device. You will log in to the BU_Secure wireless network with your existing BU Username and Password and once connected you will have the same access and security as before.

Here is a link to our Helpdesk Support article that will help you get your devices connected to the new BU_Secure network and to forget the old BU_Wireless network. It is recommended that you forget the BU_Wireless network on your device.

BU_DPSK

This network is used for guests of BU that require a secure unrestricted connection. Access to the network is granted via a DPSK (Dynamic Pre-Shared Key) Code that is generated by IT Services. For example, if you are hosting an event on campus and require wireless access, we can generate a DPSK Code for you to share with all the attendees.

Upcoming changes coming later this month:

BU_Public

We are going to be renaming the BU_Guest network to BU_Public. This better represents this network’s configuration and usage. The BU_Public network is not secured, is time limited to 90-minutes, and uses a commercial internet package separate from BU’s Campus Network. This may be slower and less convenient for data-intensive tasks, like video calling. This network is not recommended for student or employee use — the BU_Secure network will provide a better service. Connecting to the BU_Public network is going to remain unchanged, and still requires users to accept Information Technology Acceptable Use Policy (AUP).

Sunsetting old networks

At the end of April, we will be removing the old wireless networks (BU_Wireless and BU_Guest), so to ensure no interruptions, please connect your devices to the new networks by following the support articles listed above.
