Put a candle in your window for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

We are shining a light on violence.

November is Domestic Violence Awareness month. Domestic violence can happen to anyone but women, younger adults, people with disabilities, the 2SLGBTQIA+ community and recently separated women and men are even more at risk. The candle campaign shows solidarity with women and 2SLGBTQIA+ living with domestic abuse.

Brandon University’s Status of Women Review Committee (SWRC) and BU Queer are partnering to raise awareness and show support for “The Light in the Window Campaign”. The campaign invites the BU community to light a candle in their front window throughout the month of November to show their support for women and 2SLGBTQIA+ who have experienced domestic and other forms of violence.

You can pick up a free flameless candle from Cheryl Fleming’s office (CHO 333) or from Human Resources to display in your window and show your support for those who are at risk. Please avoid lit flames on campus. If you’d like, take a photo of your candle and share it on your social media. And, for direct local support that makes a difference, consider a donation to Brandon’s Women’s Resource Centre (https://thewomenscentrebrandon.com/) and YWCA Women’s Shelter (https://www.ywcabrandon.ca/homes-and-programs).

If you, or someone you know, is being abused, call the Domestic Violence Crisis/Information Line at 1-877-977-0007 or TTY 1-888-987-2829 for free confidential information and help.
