Brandon University international students share their journeys in videos

The return of the Destination: BU video challenge is bringing six more compelling stories of Brandon University international students to your screen.

The students have produced short, social-media style videos documenting their voyages from their homes across the world to Brandon to pursue their dreams at BU. You can watch the videos and vote for your favourite story. Two winners will be chosen, one through the popular vote and the other by a BU panel, with the winners each receiving $500 to contribute to their education. The videos can be seen at BrandonU.ca/International-Videos.

“The commitment that our international students make to attend Brandon University, saying goodbye to their loved ones and the homes they know, for a new chapter at BU is always inspiring,” said David Rowland, Director of the Office of International Activities at BU. “Each student’s story is different, and I’m excited to share just a small sample of them with everyone. I know people will be as moved as I am watching students make this exciting journey.”

International students make up the fastest growing portion of BU’s student body, representing about 15 per cent of BU’s enrollment of approximately 3,200 students. The videos in the challenge document trips to Brandon by students from Jamaica, Mexico, Nigeria and United Arab Emirates.

“We have a lot to offer international students,” Rowland said. “We can provide them with outstanding education at a lower cost than many institutions. Brandon is an affordable community to live in and centrally located. Many of our international students pass through some of Canada’s biggest cities to get here, but they find such a welcoming and supportive community once they arrive. It’s a joy to see the excitement in our new students when they get to campus for the first time.

This is the second time the Destination: BU has been held, with the first challenge in the 2022 Winter Term generating more than 15,000 votes from around the world. Emmanuel Chijioke was the grand-prize winner, based on the popular vote. This edition of the challenge marks the first time that a second grand prize will be awarded based on the panel’s decision.
