Brandon University saddened by passing of John English

The Brandon University (BU) community is mourning the passing of John C. B. English, on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022 at the age of 85.

English joined BU in 1987 as a faculty member in the post-diploma Bachelor of Science in Mental Health (BScMH) program and served the University until his retirement in 2005. He later taught in the four-year Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing (BScPN) program, which initially was housed in the Faculty of Science. When the School of Health Studies was established in 1997, English, along with his colleagues, constituted the core members of the newly founded School.

English is remembered by his colleagues as well-liked by students and an encouraging mentor to fellow faculty members. His research interests included healthy communities and families.

“John was a valued colleague, always open to discussion, academic and otherwise,” said Linda Ross, Acting Dean of Health Studies at BU. “He also had a great sense of humour, which helped us all maintain perspective on the issues at hand.  Students and faculty alike learned a great deal from John. John contributed significantly to the development of the profession of Psychiatric Nursing in Manitoba, both in his role as an educator of Psychiatric Nursing students, and prior to that in his contributions working in clinical settings.

“John will be remembered as a kind and gentle man. He will be missed.”

A celebration of life will take place at St. George’s Anglican Church, 1011 – 5th Street, Brandon on Monday, September 26 at 11 a.m. A reception will follow. The Canadian flag at BU will be lowered to half-mast in his honour.
