Indigenous graduates honoured at Our Journey celebration

Leading up to this week’s Brandon University Convocation ceremonies, BU’s Indigenous graduates were part of a community-wide celebration of student success.

Brandon University partnered with Assiniboine Community College, the Brandon School Division and Sioux Valley High School to present Our Journey, an Indigenous student graduation celebration. Approximately 100 Indigenous graduates from BU, Assiniboine, Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School, École secondaire Neelin High School, Prairie Hope High School, Sioux Valley High School and Vincent Massey High School were recognized on Wednesday at a traditional community celebration.

The event began with grand march entry, including a traditional Welcome Song performed by Sioux Valley Dakota Nation drum group Dakota Hokshida. Dakota Hokshida also performed a traditional Honour Song following a prayer by Elder Verna DeMontigny. Each of the students was recognized individually on stage and received a gift.

The formal presentations were followed by a barbecue and traditional Métis music by DeMontigny Brothers & Company.

A video slideshow from the event can be viewed at Video.isilive.ca/brandonsd/2022-05-25%20Our%20Journey%20Video.mp4.html.
