Brandon University will hold a virtual and online Homecoming this fall, sharing campus memories, naming alumni award-winners, and facilitating digital class reunions. However, the University hopes return to hosting smaller in-person events as early as this spring.
It’s the second virtual Homecoming to be held during the pandemic, and BU’s Director of Advancement and Alumni Affairs Carla Eisler says they are building on their experience to make it a fun and rewarding experience for all alumni.
“The potential and possibility in digital events just keep getting better, and for many alumni, making a connection with the click of a button is as easy and convenient as can be,” she said. “We know it doesn’t completely replace in-person gatherings, but we can take advantage of technology to do new things.”
One way that alumni have leveraged technology over the past year has been through the launch of the BU Café. Powered by the Ten Thousand Coffees platform, the BU Café pairs current students and new grads with more seasoned alumni to build their networks, support mentorship opportunities, and continue connections.
Although current public health orders are easing, and the local Covid-19 situation is much improved from last year, Brandon University is taking a cautious approach that mirrors the University’s overall re-opening strategy.
“Many of our alumni make travel plans months ahead to come to Homecoming, and that has been difficult through the past year. Being able to host or attend a digital event gives everyone much more certainty,” she said. “We all look forward to renewing our in-person connections as soon as safely possible, and we are actively planning for an in-person Homecoming in 2022 as well as resuming more in-person events — here on campus as well as at chapters across Canada — as soon as this spring.”
