Brandon University (BU) professor Dr. Patricia Harms has been named winner of the 2021 CALACS Book Prize by the Canadian Association for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, recognizing the most outstanding book from the previous year.
Dr. Harms is the author of Ladina Social Activism in Guatemala City, 1871—1954. Published in 2020 by New Mexico University Press, the book documents the rise of social and political activism among ladinas, or non-indigenous Spanish-speaking women in Guatemala City. Over the 80 years, ladinas struggled to imagine a place for themselves through repressive dictatorial political regimes and entrenched patriarchy.
CALACS praised Dr. Harms’ archival efforts and theoretical framework, lauding the book as “a rigorous and impressive work and a major contribution to the historiographies on gender, race class, and state- and nation-building in Latin America.”
“I am humbled by this honour and pleased that the stories and accomplishments of these women will get the attention they deserve,” said Dr. Harms, an Associate Professor in BU’s Department of History.
Dr. Harms will be presented with the CALACS Book Prize during the association’s 2021 Virtual Conference, from August 23 to 25. CALACS is dedicated to facilitating networking and information exchange on Latin America and Caribbean topics in Canada and abroad.
