A Brandon University is being recognized for her work with the Chinese community in Manitoba.

Dr. Alison Marshall, a professor of religion at BU, is this year’s recipient of the William Norrie Arts & Culture Volunteer Award from Volunteer Manitoba.

“I am thrilled to receive this award, especially since Bill Norrie was a long-time supporter of, and friend to, the Manitoba Chinese Community,” Dr. Marshall said. “Volunteering for the Chinese Community and working with Dr. Du, Philip Lee, Patrick Choy and now alongside the current Winnipeg Chinese Cultural and Community Centre President Ben Lee, has been one of the most enjoyable things that I have done in my life.”

Presented by Volunteer Manitoba, the William Norrie Arts & Culture Volunteer Award recognizes the incredible contribution volunteers make to multiple arts & culture organizations throughout Manitoba. It also celebrates volunteers across Manitoba who donate their time to advancing the arts and cultural sector, whether through a leadership role or on the front lines of programs and festivals across the province. The award also recognizes the significant role that arts and cultural organizations play in the health, well-being, social inclusion and connection of Manitobans.

“All of us in the Faculty of Arts congratulate Dr. Marshall on this acknowledgement of the outstanding work that she has been doing with the Chinese community,” said BU Dean of Arts Dr. Reinhold Kramer. “The award highlights the service work that Dr. Marshall and other professors perform outside of the university supporting the larger Manitoban and Canadian communities.”

The award was formally announced on Monday with other Volunteer Manitoba awards. A full list of winners is online at An awards celebration is planned for September.
