Tuition, parking, meals and more up for grabs with Brandon University vaccine incentives

Brandon University is putting up more than $10,000 in prizes to encourage and reward vaccination against Covid-19.

The ‘Winning Shot’ campaign offers a Grand Prize of $5,000 towards a vaccinated student’s tuition and other fees, including books, residence or meal plan, if they choose. There are also several secondary prizes worth hundreds of dollars each, plus campus gift cards and BU gear.

Faculty and staff can also win, with prizes like a year’s HLC membership, Bobcats season tickets, and a year’s parking pass in the prize pool for vaccinated employees.

A full prize list, as well as eligibility, rules and the entry form, are online at BrandonU.ca/Winning-Shot.

“The vaccines are safe, incredibly effective, and are our best chance at getting back together as quickly as possible,” said BU President David Docherty, who is receiving his second shot tomorrow. “Science has done the incredible work of creating safe and effective vaccines, and now it’s up to all of us to roll up our sleeves and put the vaccines to work against Covid.”

The ‘Winning Shot’ campaign builds on previous BU initiatives to boost overall support for vaccination and encourage speedy vaccination, including the nation-wide ‘Faster, Together’ campaign.

Vaccine incentives like this are growing in popularity at organizations and in jurisdictions worldwide. For the details of this one, Brandon University was directly inspired by similar campaigns at Assiniboine Community College and the University of Lethbridge.

“People like to use sports analogies to describe initiatives like this,” Docherty said. “In this case, vaccination against Covid-19 is neither a marathon nor a sprint. It’s more of a team sport — but vaccination is a team sport where we can all win, we can all be the game-winning hero, we can all take the Winning Shot.”

Entries can be received up to Sept. 10, 2021, and most winners will be notified the following week. However, the university will be drawing winners all summer long and giving away great BU gear and merchandise, to encourage people to get vaccinated as early as they can.
