The Brandon University (BU) Department of Visual and Aboriginal Art will present a pair of public talks in Brandon next week.
On Monday, Feb. 3, Sherry Farrell Racette will visit the Manitoba Métis Federation — South West Region building at 656 Sixth St. for her presentation “Beads, Silk and Quill: Métis Women’s Art.” The free talk will begin at 7 p.m.
On Wednesday, Feb. 5, Dayna Danger will speak at BU’s Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art, located at 2021 Victoria Ave. Danger’s presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Farrell Racette is an interdisciplinary scholar and artist who teaches teaches in the Visual Arts Department at the University of Regina. Through her art and her work with archives and museums, she strives to tell the stories of people, most notably to share the stories and knowledge of women in the past.
Primarily a painter and textile artist, Farrell Racette also creates narrative objects, has begun to incorporate soundscapes into her work, and is increasingly begun to focus on beadwork in her art and research. As a children’s book illustrator she has collaborated with noted authors Maria Campbell, Ruby Slipperjack, Freda Ahenakew and Wilfred Burton.
Danger is a 2Spirit/Queer, Métis/Saulteaux/Polish visual artist who lives in Tio’tia:ke (Montreal). Through photography, sculpture, performance and video she challenges the line between empowerment and objectification. Her current work explores sexuality, gender and power through beaded leather fetish masks.
Danger has exhibited her work in Santa Fe, N.M., Winnipeg, Ottawa, Montreal, Peterborough, Ont., North Bay, Ont., Vancouver, Edmonton and Banff, Alta. She is a board member of the Aboriginal Curatorial Collective.
