For two decades, Brandon University has been providing high-quality psychiatric nursing education in Winnipeg, ensuring that trained and caring psychiatric nurses are able to meet the demand throughout Manitoba.
“The need for mental health services is increasing in Canada. This need is not limited by location but access to those services may be difficult for a growing number of people” said Dr. John Moraros, BU’s Dean of Health Studies. “Brandon University is committed to helping meet those needs for our residents, everywhere in the province. We are a leader in psychiatric nursing education, and we are pleased to be able to share our expertise and make a positive contribution in Winnipeg as well as in Brandon.”
Brandon University started Canada’s first Bachelor of Science in Psychiatric Nursing program in 1995 at the Brandon campus, and expanded it to Winnipeg in 1999. Later, BU also started North America’s first Master of Science in Psychiatric Nursing, still Canada’s only such program.
“Psychiatric nursing in Canada has a special place at Brandon University,” Dr. Moraros said. “We are thankful to our partners and look forward to continuing to grow and expand our programming both in Brandon and in Winnipeg to better serve our people.”
The 20th anniversary was marked with a gathering and ceremonial cake-cutting at the program site in Winnipeg.
“It’s important to share this celebration with the people and organizations who have been an important part of the past 20 years of BU psychiatric nursing education here in Winnipeg,” said Dr. David Docherty, President of Brandon University. “Our profound thanks go to the University of Winnipeg for their support and partnership, and for providing us with physical space for the program. And thanks, too, to the College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Manitoba, for their ongoing commitment to RPNs and to advancing the practice of professional psychiatric nursing here in Manitoba.”
