Brandon University welcomes 10th anniversary Augustfest

This article is over 4 years old.

Conceived as a way of celebrating the contributions of musicians with significant connections to Western Manitoba, Augustfest X opens Sunday evening August 11 and runs through Friday, August 16, 2019. Concerts will be held each evening in the Lorne Watson Recital Hall on the Brandon University campus.

Although Augustfest is an independent non-profit community festival, most of the performers have a significant relationship to Brandon University. The opening gala features the world premiere of Azure, a sonata commissioned from Luis Ramirez for violist Greg Hay and pianist Donna Laube, followed by Vermillion, a string quartet by prominent Canadian composer Jocelyn Morlock.

The voice recital is presented by Swedish Royal Opera soloist Elin Rombo, and collaborative pianist Sharon Rogers, both of whom graduated from Brandon University. A student of Sylvia Richardson, Rombo has been honoured with the title ‘Hovsangerska’ which translates as Court Singer to the Swedish royal family.

Other performers with Westman connections include Robert McCosh (horn), Laura Jones (cello), Joan Dillon (violin), Ariel Carrabré (cello), Gillian Carrabré (violin).

BU professor Andrée Dagenais will conduct members of the Brandon University Chorale, and the winner of the 2018 Eckhardt-Gramatté National Music Competition will anchor the newly-formed Wood and Wire String Quartet.

As these musicians from every Canadian province, Sweden, Norway, Holland, and the United States gather in Brandon, Westman citizens will have a unique opportunity to celebrate their success. Full information about individual concerts and ticket pricing is available at augustfest.ca.
