An internationally recognized scholar in the fields of epidemiology, public health and preventive medicine and an experienced administrative leader in higher education will become Brandon University’s new Dean of the Faculty of Health Studies.
Dr. Jean (John) Moraros will assume the role of Dean for a five-year term on Aug. 1, 2019.
“I am thrilled to welcome Dr. Moraros to Brandon University,” said Dr. Meir Serfaty, BU’s Acting Vice-President (Academic & Provost). “He brings an impressive track record of research, community engagement, and academic excellence that fit very well with the existing strengths of both the Faculty of Health Studies and of BU.”
Dr. Moraros comes to BU from the University of Saskatchewan, where he served as an Associate Professor of Behavioral Science, Health Disparities, and Epidemiology in the School of Public Health. He holds an MD from Universidad Autonoma de Ciudad Juárez, Mexico and an MPH and Ph.D. in Molecular Biology from New Mexico State, USA. Previously, Dr. Moraros also served in various academic leadership positions, including Director, Master of Public Health (MPH) program. Presently, he serves on the Executive Board for a number of national and international organizations. He has authored or co-authored more than 50 peer-reviewed manuscripts in highly respected scientific journals and has given more than 60 scientific presentations (both oral and poster format) in various national and international conferences.
Dr. Moraros’ research is predicated on evidence-based, community participatory approach, which leads to practical and effective public health interventions and utilizes culturally appropriate strategies to help empower minority, marginalized and vulnerable populations to take ownership of their own healthcare needs, services, and status. Recent research has focused on topics such as healthcare delivery systems, mental health, substance use and addictions, sexually transmitted infections and obesity.
“The people of Brandon and the Faculty of Health Studies have been so warm and welcoming,” Dr. Moraros said. “It is an honour and a privilege to be entrusted with this wonderful opportunity to lead BU’s Faculty of Health Studies and set our sights to even greater heights.”
Emphasizing the importance of student-centered learning, interdisciplinary research and community outreach, Dr. Moraros said he was looking forward to learning more about BU and fully exploring the opportunities for the Faculty of Health Studies.
“I am excited about the future and look forward to the positive impact of our collaborative work,” he said. “There are many opportunities to grow our academic offerings and programming, enhance our research capacity and outputs and strength our bond and contributions to our local, national and international community. We can continue to improve the quality of life for people, right here in southwestern Manitoba.”
Dr. Moraros said that developing and deepening partnerships will be a priority.
“The Faculty of Health Studies and BU are poised to accomplish a number of great initiatives in the near future,” he said. “We invite and welcome the active participation and meaningful contributions of our current and prospective students, our outstanding faculty and staff and our community partners and organizations. I urge them to please join us on this exciting journey.”
