A pair of film screenings will highlight Sexual Assault Awareness Month at Brandon University (BU).

On Wednesday, March 6, a screening of “The Bystander Moment: Transforming Rape Culture at its Roots” will be held at the Evans Theatre at 7 p.m. The film is the latest documentary by Dr. Jackson Katz. It will be followed by a discussion with BU’s Sexual Violence Education and Prevention Coordinator Carla Navid regarding rape culture and how the Bystander Model can be is effective and changing it. More information on the film can be found at BystanderMoment.org.

On Monday, March 25 BU will present An Evening with Mandi Gray, starting at 7 p.m. at the Evans Theatre. The night will begin with a showing of the documentary “Slut or Nut: Diary of a Rape Trial,” which follows Gray as she navigates the Canadian legal system after filing a report of sexual assault. Gray, who lives in Toronto, will be on hand to speak following the film. For more information on the film, visit SlutOrNut.ca.

Both events are free and open to the public. Paid concessions will be available.

“Both of these films provide powerful messages that look at sexual violence from different perspectives and they are particularly relevant for any university,” Navid said. “‘The Bystander Moment’ looks at how each and every one of us can take small steps that will add up to significant changes in societal attitudes that contribute to sexual violence. ‘Slut or Nut’ takes a very personal look at the type of challenges people face in having their voice heard when statistics show that only three in 1,000 sexual assaults result in a conviction.”

Additionally, a display will be set up at the John E. Robbins Library throughout March. The display features many available books and DVDs highlighting sexual violence on university campuses, bystander training, consent and healing from the trauma of sexual violence. The display is located on the main floor, near the front desk.
