BRANDON – Almost 40 students from Brandon University’s (BU) Master of Psychiatric Nursing (MPN) program met on campus this week for their orientation.
The students work in the mental health field at locations across Canada, many of them full time, while advancing their skills and knowledge through distance education at BU. During the annual three-day orientation, the students take part in seminars, share their research and get to know their professors and each other.
The networking aspect of MPN orientation is valuable for the students, who are able to form support groups that motivate them, allow them to discuss research ideas, and share tips on balancing their coursework and research with busy professional and personal lives.
The MPN program at BU is the first of its kind in North America. It has grown rapidly, with 79 students currently enrolled, including Special Status students who are taking courses as they work toward full participation in the program. Through online learning platforms and discussion forums, Master of Psychiatric Nursing students typically take two or three years to complete their courses. Additionally, their thesis work will normally take another year or two to complete.
Brandon University is preparing to welcome thousands more students, including 923 new students, with full Orientation activities beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Fall term classes start on Wednesday, Sept. 5.
