Brandon University students, staff and faculty contributed many heartfelt and deeply-held sentiments during a week-long commemoration of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
To mark the anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration, and to kick off a year’s worth of celebration leading up to the 70th anniversary, Brandon University erected several displays, conducted a social media campaign, and emblazoned excerpts on posters, online, and on television screens around campus.
Students, staff, faculty and passers-by were invited to leave their thoughts about the lasting impact of the Universal Declaration. Submissions were gathered at the Brandon campus as well as at the BU sites in Winnipeg and Dauphin.
“I was touched by the thoughtful and considered submissions we received,” said Lisa Park, BU’s Diversity and Human Rights Advisor, who coordinated the displays. “It was obvious that people had taken the time to read through the Articles of the University Declaration and to sincerely assess the impact that human rights have had on their lives today.”
Submissions ranged from the personal to the political to the profound. To some, human rights meant:
- “The freedom to speak my mind and exchange ideas.”
- “The ability to feel safe every day.”
- “I can love whomever I choose without repercussions.”
- “Learning from our past.”
- “Freedom of expression and opinion.”
Eleven submissions were chosen at random to receive passes to the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, in Winnipeg. All submissions are also being considered for a poster campaign that will celebrate the BU community’s own sentiments.
