BRANDON, Man. – This month’s Clear Lake Chamber Music Festival will feature a lineup of renowned musicians and a very special guest who is better known for a different forte.
Brandon University (BU) President and Vice-Chancellor Gervan Fearon will join Dean of Music Greg Gatien and a group of current and former BU Music students to play a jazz concert as part of the five-day festival. They will perform at Wasagaming Community Arts in Riding Mountain National Park on Friday, July 14 at 7:30 p.m.
Fearon’s love of music is well known around BU. Fearon, who will be leaving his role at BU in August, has taken saxophone lessons from students during his time at the University and also performed at the Chamber Music Festival in 2015.
“I have been gratified by Gervan’s support for the School of Music and our students, and I know that his leadership and enthusiasm extend to all other areas of BU as well,” said Gatien. “The Clear Lake Music Festival is known for outstanding concerts, but it is also about a shared passion for music, and I think Gervan fits in very well with our other performers in that regard. We’re happy to have him join us on July 14, and we hope we can convince him to take a summer vacation here in the future to share the stage with us again.”
Fearon and Gatien, who will also play saxophone, will be joined in the performance by singer Aaron Check, drummer Graydon Cramer and bassist Jordan Panko.
“As I travel across Canada and internationally representing Brandon University, I am tremendously proud to hear people speak so highly of our School of Music,” Fearon said.
“I have been privileged to hear the outstanding abilities of BU Music students and to see them grow into confident and proficient musicians. I am honoured to be invited to join them for an event as prominent as this.”
The Clear Lake Chamber Music Festival will take place from July 12 to 16, and will feature an eclectic array of performances in a wide variety of venues ranging from Wasagaming Community Arts to the Lorne Watson Recital Hall at Brandon University, the Erickson Lutheran Church and aboard The Martese during a boat cruise of Clear Lake.
“Gervan has been a great friend and supporter of the Clear Lake Chamber Music Festival. We are delighted to be able to welcome him back as a performer for the second time, and we hope it won’t be the last time,” said Festival Director Alla Turbanova. “We are excited to have many superb musicians on this year’s program, and I believe that their performances will offer something for everyone. I would also like to thank BU for sponsoring our opening night wine-and-cheese reception on July 12.”
Other guest performers will include violinists Oleg Pokhanovski, Rodica Filipoi Jeffrey and Laszlo Baroczi, clarinetist Peter Stoll, cellist Brian Yoon and trumpeter Dean McNeill. Also performing will be a pair of acclaimed pianists, Alexander Tselyakov and his son Daniel, who share a role as Artistic Directors of the Festival.
