Festival brings music to four Manitoba venues

The second week of July marks the 12th season of the Clear Lake Chamber Music Festival, directed by pianists Alexander Tselyakov and Daniel Tselyakov.

This year’s festival is comprised of six concerts: a piano recital, three chamber concerts and two jazz concerts. Performances run from Wednesday, July 12 to Sunday, July 16 and feature a wide variety of musical styles and artists. Venues will include the Erickson Lutheran Church , the Lorne Watson Recital Hall at Brandon University (BU), the Wasagaming Community Arts, and The Martese at the Marina in Wasagaming.

The Clear Lake Chamber Music Festival continues to be an important part of Canada’s cultural calendar, delighting people of all ages with a powerful musical experience. This year’s ambitious schedule is sure to please, and promises to inspire new lovers of classical music, as well as satisfy the appetites of seasoned enthusiasts.

The large-scale roster of talented guest artists includes: Alexander Tselyakov, piano; Greg Gatien, saxophone; Daniel Tselyakov, piano; Oleg Pokhanovsky, violin; Rodica Jeffrey, violin; Laszlo Baroczi, viola; Brian Yoon, cello; Peter Stoll, clarinet; Alla Turbanova, piano; Dean McNeill, trumpet; Graydon Cramer, percussion; Shannon Kristjanson, saxophone, flute, voice and Jordan Panko, jazz bass.

The wide variety in programming will make for an engaging program, and the exceptional musical talent guarantees an exciting and pleasurable experience for all.

SCHEDULE OF PERFORMANCES

WEDNESDAY, JULY 12

Prodigy Composers Through Time (Prodigy to Master)
  • Daniel Tselyakov & Alexander Tselyakov, pianists, in recital
  • Lorne Watson Recital Hall, Brandon University
  • 7:30 p.m.

The program features music of Chopin, Liszt and Prokofiev. After the concert, mingle with all festival artists at a wine & cheese reception.

THURSDAY, JULY 13

Chamber Masterworks
  • Lorne Watson Recital Hall, Brandon University
  • 7:30 p.m.

One of Brahms’ best loved clarinet-piano sonatas and the rarely performed highly romantic and dramatic Piano Quintet in C major by Béla Bartók are considered two of the great masterpieces in chamber repertoire. These works will be performed by Alexander Tselyakov, piano; Peter Stoll, clarinet; Oleg Pokhanovski, Rodica Jeffrey, violins; Laszlo Baroczi, viola; and Brian Yoon, cello.

FRIDAY, JULY 14

Jazz Concert
  • Wasagaming Community Arts
  • 7:30 p.m.

SATURDAY, JULY 15

Coffee Concert: Serious Fun!
  • Erickson Lutheran Church
  • 10:30 a.m.

Come relax with a morning cup of coffee and pastry while enjoying our popular coffee concert featuring entertainment from baroque music to movie song selections.

Sunset Jazz Cruise Concert
  • The Martese, at the Marina, Main Beach, Wasagaming (Clear Lake), Riding Mountain National Park.
  • 8:30 p.m.

Be sure to get your tickets early for this popular concert which takes you for a scenic evening tour around the peaceful waters of Clear Lake.

SUNDAY, JULY 16

Festival Grand Finale
  • Erickson Lutheran Church
  • 3 p.m.

The program will include the excellent Britten’s Suite for Violin and Piano with lots of wit and humour and an occasional sinister edge. The Beethoven Piano Quartet Op. 16 is similar to a miniature chamber piano concerto with the virtuosic keyboard part being so critical. It will certainly make a grand finale to the festival.
