BRANDON, Man. — Assiniboine Community College, Brandon University (BU) and the Sexual Education Resource Centre (SERC) are partnering next week to recognize the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.
On Wednesday, May 17, a screening of the short documentary “One Gay City: A History of LGBT Life in Winnipeg” will take place in the cafeteria classroom of the college’s Victoria Avenue East Campus.
“We’re happy to cohost this event with BU and to develop a strong relationship with SERC to create safe and inclusive environments on our respective campuses,” said Pam Roberts, Respectful College Coordinator at Assiniboine.
“We chose to screen ‘One Gay City’ because it provides a moving account of the strides that have been made, and the progress that must continue to build a diverse city where everyone can feel truly at home,” said Lisa Park, Diversity and Human Rights Advisor at BU.
“As post-secondary institutions, we feel that it is important that we take leadership on issues like these by sparking the conversations that lead to positive change.”
Following the film, there will be a short discussion about the advances made to date and what Brandon, and specifically Assiniboine and BU can do to promote inclusive, safe campus environments.
This free, public event runs from 6 – 8 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
“Our college is committed to continually recognizing and celebrating diversity. This event will kick off a campaign that will include awareness training for staff to help build an Assiniboine ALLY Program,” said Roberts.
