Students invited to stay late, study hard, and relieve stress at LNAP

The time for procrastination is … later. Now is the time for all-night studying, and Brandon University (BU) is here to help.

BU’s John E. Robbins Library and Music Library will be open all night on Wednesday, March 15, for the Long Night Against Procrastination, a special overnight study and stress-relief event.

Kicking off at 7 p.m. that evening, the Long Night Against Procrastination, or LNAP, will run until Thursday morning, March 16, at 8 a.m. It ends with a wake-up breakfast sponsored by the Brandon University Students’ Union (BUSU). Throughout the night, BU staff will offer study and research skills assistance, writing and math support, plus a series of stress-relief activities and food to keep study-weary students fueled through the night.

“We know that as the end of the semester looms, many students have a tendency to pull an all-nighter,” said Courtney Adams, BU’s Acting Director of Recruitment and Retention. “It may not be the most effective way to study, but we can help give students some tools and supports to make the best and most efficient use of their time.”

Of course, she adds, students are free to come and go as they like from the LNAP event.

“Plenty of students come for the evening, and may stay later than the library is normally open, but not the whole night. And we’re there to welcome all the early birds arriving the next morning as well,” she said. “Whatever time they come, the doors will be open, the space will be safe and warm, and there will be ample quiet study and writing space available.”

Students are encouraged to plan a ride home in advance, and a Safe Walk Program, sponsored by the President’s Office, will be in place.

Reference librarians and assistants, writing coaches, learning skills, computer help and circulation service will be available all night to work with students to help them make progress on papers and assignments.

“This is the type of event that really allows the services of BU’s John E. Robbins Library to shine,” said Tanya Cantlon, Head of Circulation Services and the chair of the LNAP planning committee. “We’re helping students quickly find the information that they’re looking for, and showing them how to put it together with their classroom knowledge into a clear and concise format — whether that’s study notes or a term paper. These are real-world skills that libraries help with every day.”

Along with working up a study plan, students are expected to work up an appetite, so free snacks and beverages will be available, as will stress reduction activities like knitting, for students who need a quick break between hitting the books. At midnight, that perennial student favourite — pizza — will be delivered, courtesy of the Brandon University Alumni Association.

“Believe me, our alumni remember what it’s like to be a student, and how coming together around a late-night pizza can really make a study session,” said Carla Eisler, BU’s Alumni Relations Officer. “Sometimes, a piece of pizza is more than cheese and pepperoni, it’s also motivation and camaraderie all served up together.”

The Long Night Against Procrastination originated at the European University Viadrina in Germany in 2010. Since then, it’s become a worldwide movement, with the University of Manitoba offering the first LNAP in Canada in 2011 and Brandon University inaugurated it in April of 2014.

A full schedule for this year year’s Long Night Against Procrastination is posted online at and there will be social media posts using the hashtag #IAMBU throughout. Brandon University Student Services will be posting on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook from the BU Student Life accounts.

Brandon University’s Long Night Against Procrastination is organized by The John E. Robbins Library, Student Services, IT Services, the Brandon University Students’ Union, and the BU Alumni Association.
