Hundreds to get taste of university life Tuesday at BU

Brandon University (BU) will throw open its doors on Tuesday to welcome hundreds of high school students, their parents, and others curious about exploring the possibilities of a university education.

“Whether you’re pretty sure you know what path you want to pursue, or whether you haven’t figured it out just yet, we’ve got all the BU options lined up for everyone to sample during an exciting, jam-packed Open House,” said Courtney Adams, BU’s Acting Director of Recruitment and Retention. “We’ll have plenty of ways to try your hand at something new — or several somethings new — and we’ll have tons of friendly volunteers to answer any questions you might have.”

Brandon University is putting the focus on experience at this year’s Open House, with prospective students given the chance to test out what it will really be like for them to attend BU.

“When we tested this format last year, students really loved getting to pick their own ‘classes’ and finding out what they liked best about university life. We’re making things even better this year,” Adams says. “Our pre-registration numbers are way up, and we’re hearing so much enthusiasm. I can’t wait.”

Along with pump-up entertainment to kick off the morning with local band The 204, students flocking to the BU Open House will have a chance to visit their choice of classroom and lab demonstrations, featuring everything from Fine Arts to Health Studies. The emphasis this year is on providing a broad sample of everything the BU has to offer, including the close-knit campus with small class sizes that give BU the best teacher-student ratio in the country.

“The experience you’ll have here at Brandon University is unmatched anywhere else,” Adams said. “We’re giving people on our Open House tours a taste of that, with the opportunity for personal interactions with our students and our faculty members.”

With so many options across BU’s five faculties of Arts, Science, Health Studies, Music and Education, it’s impossible for every visitor to fit in every experience during just one day. So, students at the Open House will also get a chance to peruse an Information Fair where they can connect with most parts of the University in a short time.

“Of course, we’re always open for anyone who’d like to arrange a campus tour, or even to be a Student for a Day here shadowing one of our Student Ambassadors,” Adams said. “If you can’t make our Open House, or if you want to see BU in more depth, I encourage you to give us a call or visit our website.”

Events like Open House help ease the path for people who are considering post-secondary education.

“We know, it’s a big jump from high school to university,” said Katie Gross, BU’s Acting Dean of Students. “That’s why we have ample supports in place to help with both the academic side and the emotional side. Events like our Open House help show off how friendly and welcoming the BU community is, and demonstrate how everyone can feel at home here.”

Brandon University’s Open House is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 21 at the 18th Street campus. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged, at brandonu.ca/open-house. The Open House is open to all prospective students, regardless of age, as well as their parents.
