The oil painting “The Church and the Word” is an example of Steve Gouthro’s photorealism style.

Presence – Steve Gouthro features the work of Gouthro, who taught painting, drawing and art fundamentals in the Department of Visual and Aboriginal Art at BU for 10 years. Through painting styles rooted in photorealism, Gouthro tracks the ways in which humans share space and navigate the land, urban surroundings and each other.

By exhibiting a selection of new and older works from several art series Presence – Steve Gouthro exposes not only Gouthro’s figurative and literal presence in Brandon but also the teaching philosophies he employed at BU.

Gouthro is an acclaimed Winnipeg-based artist and educator whose mediums include painting and drawing.  He has had solo exhibitions at various galleries, including the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba, and the Thunder Bay Art Gallery. He has participated in group exhibitions at Ace Art Inc., SITE Gallery, and the Nickel Arts Museum among others.

Gouthro’s art has been reviewed in numerous publications, including Border Crossings, The National Post and The Winnipeg Free Press, and can be found in the collections of the Canada Council Art Bank, Winnipeg Art Gallery, and BU.

While maintaining his art practice, Gouthro was a committed studio arts professor, first at the University of Manitoba, and then at BU. During his academic career he also provided art community classes and workshops at various art galleries and arts organizations. Gouthro retired from BU this spring to focus on his visual art practice.

A free reception will be held on Thursday at 7 p.m., at the Sutherland Gallery, located at 2021 Victoria Ave. Presence – Steve Gouthro will remain on exhibition until Saturday, Nov. 26. Gallery hours can be found at thesutherland.ca. For more information, contact exhibition curator Cathy Mattes at MattesC@BrandonU.ca
