A Brandon University visual art instructor will spend the next two and a half months in Brooklyn, New York, as artist-in-residence at the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP).

Kevin Ei-ichi deForest, an assistant professor in the Department of Visual and Aboriginal Art, will be creating a new series of paintings during his residency, as he continues to explore hybrid identity, in particular his own “Eurasian” heritage of mixed Japanese and European descent. He will be in residency there until the end of June.

The Brooklyn Visual Arts Residency is a substantial grant from the Manitoba Arts Council that supports professional visual artists and curators from Manitoba at the ISCP. DeForest was also supported by a generous grant from the Whitehead Foundation.

The ISCP is a non-profit contemporary art institution that was established in 1994. It is housed in a historic 18,000 square-foot former factory in East Williamsburg, and contains 35 studios for artists and curators, as well as an exhibition gallery, and a project space. Each year, approximately 100 artists come for a residency and more than 10,000 visitors take part in the organization’s public activities.

As well as being provided with a studio space, the ISCP provides an immersive environment where artists and curators and curators from around the world share space and ideas in the art world hub of New York.
