Rural Development and Agricultural Policy

Over the course of a dozen days, students heard successful rural development reaches beyond an agricultural sector. While progressive agricultural policy includes and promotes small farmers and value-add niche processing and products, in Europe as in Canada off farm incomes remain a necessity for family survival. Teagasc (pronounced Chug aus), is an Irish funded rural agency with 1300 staff, dispersed across the Republic, most locally located. While farm data collection and analysis are framed in relation to EU agencies, programs and policies, they are active in local business development, innovation, and exports.
