BRANDON, MB – A packed house celebrated Brandon University’s (BU) generous donors and outstanding student achievements on the evening of March 18th, 2015 during BU’s annual Awards Reception. The event connected donors who have supported scholarships and bursaries with the student recipients of those awards in the spirit of fellowship and celebration.

“Brandon University’s Awards Reception is a hallmark event in our academic year, and an experience we all look forward to,” said Dr. Michael Kim, Acting Associate Vice-President (External) at Brandon University and host for the evening. “It was such a pleasure to see donors and students meeting one another and talking about their respective connections to Brandon University.”

Speakers for the evening included Aaron Bull, multiple award recipient and current student in the Master of Rural Development program at Brandon University. Bull recently completed a Bachelor of Science (Honours) with a Major in Applied Disaster and Emergency Studies, and a Minor in Psychology at BU.

“It was an honour to speak on behalf of students at this event, and to give thanks to all the donors,” said Bull. “It is very meaningful to be able to put a face to the name and to meet the individuals who make scholarships and bursaries possible for students like me.”

Joining Bull with remarks on behalf of donors was Gerald Butler, BU class of ‘63 alumnus and donor to the Seven Generations Scholarship at Brandon University. Butler shared his thoughts on the important role financial support through awards can play for students as they strive toward their full potential.

“Seeing and meeting Brandon University’s student award recipients is so meaningful for me,” said Butler. “I want to continue doing my part to help ensure that BU has the means to support outstanding students who will make a difference in their communities through scholarships and bursaries.”

So far this academic year, Brandon University has distributed more than $1.25 million in scholarships and bursaries to students in each of the University’s five faculties.

“The generous gifts provided by each of the donors to our students speak to the outstanding commitment our friends and partners make in supporting student success at BU,” said Dr. Gervan Fearon, BU President and Vice-Chancellor. “I wish to congratulate our student award recipients on their many achievements and I know they will be making their own contributions to others and society in the future through the realization of their educational goals.”

Brandon University, founded in 1899, promotes excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship, and educates students so that they can make a meaningful difference as engaged citizens and leaders.
