BRANDON, MB – Brandon University’s Faculty of Health Studies was recently bolstered by the donation of one hundred copies of a new work authored by one of Canada’s most celebrated internists. Gifted to BU by Chancellor Emeritus, Ryerson University, G. Raymond Chang and Donette Chin-Loy Chang, Dr. Herbert Ho Ping Kong’s The Art of Medicine: Healing and the Limits of Technology will provide students with insight into the core principles of Dr. Ho Ping Kong’s patient-centred approach to diagnosis and treatment.
Based in Toronto, Chang is one of the original founders of CI Financial, the second largest publicly traded fund company in Canada. Named “Outstanding Philanthropist of 2010” by the Toronto chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Chang’s philanthropic focus consistently displays an emphasis on education and research.
“Dr. Ho Ping Kong is a leader in his field,” said Chang. “I know his insight on the holistic approach to patient interaction and diagnosis will greatly benefit students in health-related disciplines at Brandon University and the lay person as well.”
Drawn from a clinical career spanning over fifty years, The Art of Medicine explores Dr. Ho Ping Kong’s choice to focus this book on turning the practice of medicine into an “art” through the use of basic human interaction skills.
Coincidentally, Dr. Ho Ping Kong has a personal connection to Brandon. His first professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University College of the West Indies (UCWI), Dr. D.B. Stewart, was originally from Brandon – small world indeed.
“This gift from Mr. Chang and Mrs. Chin-Loy Chang is a wonderful gesture of support for our students,” said Dr. Dean Care, Dean of Health Studies at Brandon University. Dr. Gervan Fearon, Vice-President (Academic & Provost) at BU adds, “It is inspiring for us to know that BU has strong partners not only locally, but also across the country.”
“Our hope is that this book will allow healthcare workers and others to understand and appreciate what the practice of medicine should really be and what we should ask of all our healthcare practitioners ,” said Chin-Loy Chang. “Dr. Ho Ping Kong embodies the Art of Medicine.”
