Alumni Honoured for Lifetime Achievements

BRANDON, MB – Brandon University (BU) will honour two alumni with Lifetime Achievement Awards during the 2014 Convocation on May 30.

Florence Brownridge (BA ’49, BSW ’51, MS Social Work ’58)

Florence Brownridge graduated Brandon College in 1949, and pursued a distinguished career in social work in both Canada and the US. Doug Adams devoted nearly 20 consecutive years of volunteer service to BU in a number of capacities, following his graduation in 1987.

“In their own ways, each of these recipients has demonstrated exceptional, long-time service to Brandon University and its values,” says BU President and Vice-Chancellor, Deborah Poff. “We applaud their dedication and life’s work.”

Born 1928 in Brandon, MB, Brownridge (BA ’49, BSW ’51, MS Social Work ’58) was a social worker for more than 35 years until her retirement in 1985, authoring several journal articles on home care, delivering testimony to US Senate and House committees, and publishing the 1988 book, Homemaker-Home Health Aide Services, Policies and Practices. She was a long-time Executive Director of the National Homecaring Council in New York City, and her community activities included President, Manitoba Association of Social Workers; Board and Executive Committee member, The National Assembly of National Voluntary Health and Welfare Organizations, NYC, and cross-Canada study for the Canadian Welfare Council, Ottawa, Ontario. She remains a dedicated BU supporter through the Florence and Bob Brownridge Bursary, given each year to an accomplished Arts Faculty student.

Adams (BEd hon. ’87, Silver Medalist) has served Brandon University in a number of capacities, including Board of Governors member, BU Foundation president, fundraising campaign worker, and Alumni Association president. He has garnered several awards for his contributions to the University, including Foundation Outstanding Volunteer Fundraising Award (2004), Alumni Association Award (2006), and Foundation Honorary Trustee Apex Award (2010). A native of Bagot, MB, Adams has worked for the Brandon School Division since 1987 and is a current board member with Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, past-president of the Brandon West Liberal Association, and director of the Brandon Souris Liberal Association. In 2013, he received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his service to BU.
