BRANDON, MB – A new display of whimsical artwork from Brandon artist and author Dr. Kurt Noll has opened in the campus library at Brandon University.

Ice Cream Come, by Dr. Kurt Noll, 2013 (web)The exhibition features eighteen drawings and paintings, mostly produced during the past year, but with several examples of Dr. Noll’s earlier work. An associate professor of religion at Brandon University, Dr. Noll was a designer and illustrator for an advertising agency prior to attending graduate school to study the history of religions.

“My images are lighthearted,” says Dr. Noll. “I try to be accessible to any viewer.” His works include a huge ice cream cone, more than a meter tall, and other oversized images, as well as smaller, highly detailed renditions of old toys and knick-knacks assembled against strange, colorful backgrounds.

Dr. Kurt Noll, Department of Religion, Brandon University (web)Dr. Noll is an active member of the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba (AGSM). He paints with acrylic paint on canvas, draws the human figure in black and white, and produces detailed depictions of odd objects with color pencils. AGSM Curator Natalia Lebedinskaia says, “Kurt’s use of vibrant colours makes his work very popular and patrons look forward each year to seeing his new art. This showing will be well-received.”

The exhibition opened January 6 at the Tommy McLeod Curve Gallery on the second floor of John E. Robbins Library on the Brandon University campus and continues through mid-April, 2014. The gallery is open to the public during library hours. There is no admission charge.
