BRANDON, MB – A new Sports Wall of Fame will be unveiled this weekend at Brandon University (BU), named in honour of two long-time University supporters and community builders.
Mr. Dick and Mrs. Verda McDonald are BU alumni who first met on campus in the 1950s, married, and raised three sons in Brandon. Dick, a native of Saskatchewan, obtained a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education from BU. He taught for over a decade before working as a financial advisor from 1969 until retiring in 1999. Verda (née Peden) was born in Brandon and received Bachelor’s degrees in Arts and Pedagogy.
The McDonalds have generously supported student success at Brandon University through countless volunteer hours, and the Dick and Verda McDonald Bursaries in Men’s and Women’s Basketball and Volleyball. To date, they have donated over $103,000. Verda is Past-President of the Brandon University Alumni Association. Dick received the Foundation’s Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award in 2013. Both were given the Alumni Award for Distinguished Service in 2010.
“In addition to tirelessly supporting student success,” says BU President and Vice-Chancellor Deborah Poff, “the McDonalds are two of the nicest people you will ever meet. They embody the spirit of our University, and the Dick and Verda McDonald Sports Wall Fame is a fitting, lasting tribute.”
The official unveiling is open to the public and takes place at 11:30 am, Saturday, October 19th on the second floor of the Healthy Living Centre.
