BRANDON, MB – Brandon University (BU) is establishing a new centre of excellence to support teaching and learning. The Centre for Teaching, Learning, and Technology (CTLT) will provide leadership in the development of student-centred, evidence-based approaches to teaching within the University.
“Education techniques do change and we continually revisit our teaching in light of changing technology and learning needs to further meet student needs and to support faculty teaching success,” says Dr. Gervan Fearon, new Vice-President (Academic and Provost). “The CTLT will coordinate and enhance our existing training, leading BU’s student-centred approach to education.”
The Centre will provide activities and resources including a comprehensive website to the University community to heighten faculty development through organizing presentations and workshops on teaching/learning/technology topics, coordinating a faculty mentoring program, encouraging the scholarship of teaching and learning, providing support for instructors engaged in distance delivery, and compiling and sharing course/curriculum development information and new faculty resources.
“Brandon University has long prided itself as a high-quality teaching university,” says Dr. Daniel Olsen, professor of Geography and member of BU’s Teaching Enhancement Committee. “The CTLT will not only allow faculty, staff and students to focus and improve their teaching and classroom skills, but also put the University on par with other Canadian universities which have similar teaching centres.”
Dr. Fearon thanks Dr. Dean Care, former Vice-President (Academic and Provost) and the members of BU’s Teaching Enhancement Committee for their leadership on this initiative.
Brandon University, founded in 1899, promotes excellence in teaching, research and scholarship; educating students so that they can make a meaningful difference as engaged citizens and leaders.
