Battle on the Border: Brandon University vs Minot State

This article is over 12 years old.

Brandon, MB — This past Sunday afternoon, more than 150 students from Brandon University (BU) and Minot State University (MSU) participated in the 2nd annual dodgeball tournament aptly named “Battle on the Border”. Following five series of round robin play, MSU managed to retain their dodgeball championship title, first given out in September, 2011.

Meeting on either side of the 49th parallel, the International Peace Garden once again proved to be the perfect playing field for an event that aims to forge a cross-border bond between the two universities.

“There was a healthy level of competition coupled with great fun during this team building activity,” said Dr. Deborah Poff, Brandon University’s President and Vice-Chancellor, who supported BU’s efforts in person. “This second ‘Battle on the Border’ was a great success, with plans to continue building this fun event as we explore friendships and partnerships with our US neighbours.”

With fans cheering on their home university in a show of school spirit and pride, team action was highly energetic. Even the respective mascots of BU and MSU, Bailey the Bobcat and Buckshot the Beaver, got into the game. At the end of the day players from both teams enjoyed an afternoon of exercise, competition and camaraderie.

“This year’s event resulted in not only a high level of participation from both universities, but many cross-border friendships being established, which is ultimately the objective both universities are hoping to achieve” said David Rowland, Dean of Students at BU. “As for school spirit, the fact that each team had representatives from various faculties illustrates its growing popularity. This reaffirms our commitment to continue to organize this event as part of our orientation for years to come.”

This event launched what could become one of the greatly anticipated highlights of the academic year at both institutions. BU is looking forward to September, 2013, when our students will fight to bring the “Battle on the Border” title back home to Canada.
