BU Science Students to Benefit from MOU with University of Minnesota School of Engineering

BRANDON, MB — Science graduates from Brandon University will now have a new option for further education. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed today by officials from the University of Minnesota (UM) School of Engineering and Brandon University (BU) formalizing an articulated degree program between institutions. This degree program will minimally require the completion of a three-year B.Sc. at Brandon University, followed by two or more years of study at the University of Minnesota. For program eligibility, students must complete specified prerequisite courses within their three-year major program at BU. Students then complete an additional 2 years of study at UM to earn an engineering degree in one of the following disciplines: aerospace engineering and mechanics, biomedical engineering, bioproducts and biosystems engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, geological engineering, materials science and engineering and mechanical engineering.

The UM School of Engineering is consistently rated in the top 30 engineering programs in the world (source: Times Higher Education 2011-12) with a very highly rated chemical engineering program that rates #4 in the United States, following only MIT, UC Berkeley and Stanford (source: US News College Compass). Furthermore, BU graduates can take advantage of a reciprocity agreement between the governments of Minnesota and Manitoba whereby Manitoba residents pay the same tuition as in-state students. In-state tuition was $13,022/year for 2011-12, a savings for BU graduates of $5,000/per year compared to out-of-state fees. The pre-requisite list varies with engineering specialty but always includes first and second year calculus and first year physics as part of the three year degree in Science.
