BRANDON, MB – For the second season in a row Jonathan Sloane has been named a Canada West second team all-star. The Winchester, Ontario product just completed his fifth and final year of eligibility as a Brandon Bobcat and now has one more achievement to add to his resume.
“After a year of hard work it’s nice to get the recognition at the end, but it’s a little bittersweet because it would have been nice to go to Final Four and nationals,” says Sloane. “It’s an honour to be named an all-star and I’m really thankful of my coaches and team mates for another great year.”
The 6’9 middle has been one of the most dominant attackers in the nation for the past two seasons, leading the Canada West conference in hitting percentage this year and last.
“Jon’s one of the most likeable guys around. He’s always got a smile on his face, he works hard and sets a good example,” says Russ Paddock, men’s volleyball head coach. “After his injury last year and not being able to participate in the playoffs it’s been great to see him have continued success and it’s good to see him be recognized.”
Sloane’s rise to one of the most successful Bobcats in the program’s history came from humble beginnings. A relative late-comer to the sport, Sloane began playing volleyball at the age of 19, first playing competitively at the college level with the Algonquin College Thunder in his first two seasons of eligibility. Today he holds Brandon University’s career record for hitting percentage and is looking to continue his playing career.
“After playing college level in Ontario I never expected to end up playing in Canada West and having all-star awards, so it’s been a big eye-opener and I’m hoping there is more to come,” says Sloane.
Sloane plans to spend the summer at the Volleyball Canada Training Centre in Gatineau, Quebec.
