BRANDON, MB — Earlier this afternoon, Premier Greg Selinger took a tour of the construction site at Brandon University’s Healthy Living Centre (HLC). The facility, which has received the funding commitment of up to $5.3 million from the province, is on budget and on time.
“It’s an exciting project,” said Premier Selinger after his tour. “Another 50, 000 square feet of new space and renovated 30,000 square feet and… it’s going to be a very energy efficient building with lots of glass and lots of natural light coming in. It looks great.”
The Premier, Brandon East MLA Drew Caldwell and Dr. Deborah Poff, Brandon University’s President and Vice-Chancellor toured the construction site with Bill Myers, the Brandon University Construction Manager, who pointed out many of the building’s most important features.
“You like to see new assets being built at universities because you know they’re going to endure for more than one generation. This is going to be a real plus for 50, 60, 70 years ahead and the idea of a healthy living centre that’s also available to the community to use, that’ll be to the benefit of Brandon,” Premier Selinger said. “That’s a good thing.”
Previously implemented energy efficient initiatives in other buildings that have been integrated into the HLC also impressed the Premier.
“This is a university with an excellent reputation and many of the programs are some of the most outstanding programs in Canada. We want to make sure we emphasize that. This new centre will allow us to do that,” he said.
Dr. Poff was pleased with the Premier’s visit and noted that: “This will be a great recruitment asset for students. As well, a lot of faculty and staff will work out here as will the community. This will be good for the City and good for the University.”
