BRANDON, MB – The appointment of Dr. Sal Badali as the Dean of Education was approved by the Brandon University Board of Governors in February.

“I am very much looking forward to joining Brandon University as Dean of Education,” said Dr. Badali, who was most recently the Associate Dean of Faculty Development and Human Resources in the Faculty of Education at the University of Regina. “I am excited about this opportunity for a variety of reasons, not least of which is Brandon’s commitment to teaching and learning, diversity, social justice, equity, inclusion, and its special emphasis on education for rural, aboriginal, and northern communities.”

Dr. Badali officially began working at Brandon University on July 1, 2011.

“With Dr. Badali’s appointment, we welcome a well respected member of the university and educational community to Brandon University,” said Dr. Grills, Vice-President, Academic and Research. “Sal is a scholar, educator and leader whose commitment to public education will benefit our students, faculty, and the education in Manitoba more generally. I look forward to the leadership he will offer as our next Dean of Education.”

A well versed administrator who has been staffing courses, assigning workloads, organizing and overseeing faculty searches, liaising with educational partners, among other tasks, Dr. Badali has also collaborated with the Dean of Education at the University of Regina regarding issues like budget preparation. When he started at the University of Regina in 1999, Dr. Badali taught various education courses, like curriculum development and the theory and practice of instruction, at the undergraduate and graduate levels. He was a faculty advisor and supervised graduate work as well. He spent his sabbatical leave in 2006 at the Ontario Institute for the Study of Education/University of Toronto, where he was a guest lecturer.

Prior to Regina, Dr. Badali was at the University of British Columbia’s Centre for the Study of Curriculum and Instruction, from where he obtained a Ph.D. Also, he has an M.Ed. from the University of Western Ontario, a B.Ed. from the University of Toronto, and a B.A. in history from York University.

During his career, Dr. Badali has accumulated other, related hands-on experience: He was a Grade 8 teacher for a few years and taught history, business, data and information processing and other subjects in two high schools.

“I look forward to working with all educational partners as we prepare graduates to make a meaningful difference as citizens and leaders in the broader community,” said Dr. Badali. “It is an honour to be joining an institution that is committed to collaborative, innovative forms of community-building, service, and research. I look forward to building on existing strengths as we strive to extend our reputation as an exemplary Faculty of Education.”
