Brandon, MB — During the 100th Convocation at Brandon University, four outstanding Canadians will be acknowledged for their efforts and accomplishments, each receiving an honorary doctorate.

Brandon University is pleased to announce the conferral of a Doctor of Literature (honoris causa) upon Dr. Ray Bollman, an agricultural economist and the Chief of the Rural Research Group with Statistics Canada.

A former Stanley Knowles Visiting Professor at Brandon University, Dr. Bollman was raised on his family’s farm at Moline, Manitoba.  He attended elementary school in Moline, high school in Rivers and then enrolled in the Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba obtaining his B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics.  Dr. Bollman went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Toronto.

Prior to his current professional role, he held a number of other positions with Statistics Canada.  In addition, he has served as President of the Canadian Association of Rural Studies, President of the Canadian Agricultural Economic Society, and as a member of the founding committee of the Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation.

Dr. Bollman’s research interests have evolved from the structure of agriculture and the pluriactivity of farm family members to all socio-economic aspects of rural populations.  A prolific writer and editor, he edited Rural and Small Town Canada and Rural Employment: An International Perspective (with John M. Bryden). Furthermore, he was the founding editor of Statistics Canada’s Rural and Small Town Canada Analysis Bulletins in 1998 and continues in this role.

“Data and data-driven policy are critical for making the case for policies which sustain and advance rural communities in Canada. Dr. Bollman understands rural communities, both from his lived experience and from his education and career. Brandon University is proud to recognize Dr. Bollman’s significant achievements in advancing the interests and needs of rural Canadians,” said Deborah Poff, Brandon University’s President and Vice-Chancellor.

There will be four convocation ceremonies at Brandon University this spring. These will take place June 3 and 4 at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium.
