Brandon, MB — To mark the 100th Convocation at Brandon University, four outstanding Canadians will be acknowledged for their efforts, each receiving an honorary doctorate.
Brandon University is pleased to announce the conferral of a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) upon Canada’s Ambassador to the United States and Manitoba’s former Premier, Gary Doer. In October 2009, Mr. Doer assumed his responsibilities as Canada’s 23rd representative to the United States of America.
Prior to taking up his current position in Washington D.C., Ambassador Doer served as Premier of Manitoba for ten years. During that time, he worked extensively with U.S. Governors to enhance Canada-U.S. cooperation on trade, agriculture, water protection, climate change and renewable energy.
Ambassador Doer, who hails from Winnipeg, won three consecutive elections as Premier of Manitoba with successive increased majorities. In 2005, he was named by Business Week magazine as one of the top 20 international leaders on climate change. His government introduced balanced budgets during each of his ten years in office while reducing many taxes, including a plan to eliminate small business tax. As Premier, he led strategic investments in health care, education, and training and infrastructure.
“We are pleased to honour this distinguished Manitoban who has served our province and our nation so well and for so long,” said Deborah Poff, Brandon University’s President and Vice-Chancellor.
There will be four convocation ceremonies at Brandon University this spring. These will take place June 3 and 4, at the Western Manitoba Centennial Auditorium.
