BRANDON, MB – As part of his recruiting class for the upcoming season, men’s volleyball coach Russ Paddock is looking to the past. The Bobcats will be welcoming back former players Luke Reynolds, Paul Robidoux and Brock Payne for the 2011-2012 season.
Luke Reynolds is returning to Canada after spending the past season in his home-country Australia where he worked as an assistant coach for the Australian Junior National team. It was a busy season for Reynolds as he also was the head coach at Billanook College and Halleybury College, but he’s anxiously waiting to re-join the Bobcats on the court.
“I cannot wait to return to the place that has given me so much over the past few years. It certainly feels like I will be returning ‘home’ once again,” says Reynolds. “After being away from BU and the Bobcats for a year, I can now fully appreciate how much I love being there. Becoming a member of the BU Bobcats again for 2011-2012 is going to be amazing. I certainly look forward to being amongst friends, family and team mates once again”
Robidoux is returning to the Bobcats after playing professionally in Austria in 2009-2010, and most recently serving as an assistant coach with the Bobcats this past season.
“My time away as an assistant coach during last year’s run to the national championships has helped fuel my fire in helping the Bobcats return as one of the top teams in Canada West,” says Robidoux. “With talented young players coming into the program, my aim for next season is to lead by example in training on and off the court.”
Payne, a graduate of Brandon’s Vincent Massey High School, is a 6’3” outside hitter that has spent the past season playing with the Keyano College Huskies.
“I’m very happy to be coming home and playing for the Bobcats next season,” says Payne. “The program had a very successful year this year and I want to contribute in every way I can to help the team back to winning seasons for the remainder of my future years here.”
Paddock feels the three returnees will each bring unique strengths and skills to a team coming off a CIS national silver medal.
“It is huge for our team to bring back these three student athletes, says Paddock. “Paul and Luke’s experience, maturity and work ethic will be a tremendous asset to our program. No one works harder in weight room or on the court than these two. They are tremendous role models for some of the younger players on our team. Brock gained great experience playing for Keyano in the ACAC last season. He was the go to guy on the team finishing 4th in the conference in kills per set. I know he is excited to challenge for a starting position.”
Reynolds, Robidoux and Payne were all members of the Bobcats team that won a CIS bronze medal in 2009.
